NUMBER - A number is a mathematical
object used to count, measure, and also label. In HINDU – ARABIC system, we have TEN DIGITS, namely 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 called zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and nine respectively. ![]() A NUMBER is denoted by a group of digits, called NUMERAL. Some Examples: # Example-01 A given NUMERAL is – ‘547194’. We have to write this numeral IN WORDS, that is – 'Five lakh forty-seven thousand one hundred ninety-four' # Example-02 A NUMBER is given in words; we have to write this number in figures (using digits) – 'Five crore four lakh eight thousand five' so in figures it will be - '50408005' ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are the digits used in forming a number. 2. The numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, … are called counting numbers or natural numbers. 3. If two numbers are not equal, then one is either greater than OR lesser than the other. 4. If different digits are given, we can form numbers by keeping the digits in different places. 5. To make the LARGEST NUMBER using the given digits, ARRANGE the digits in DESCENDING ORDER. 6. To make the SMALLEST NUMBER using the given (non-zero) digits, arrange the digits in ASCENDING ORDER. IF given digits contains ‘0’ (zero), then put ‘0’ (zero) at the SECOND POSITION from EXTREME LEFT and rest of the digits in ASCENDING ORDER. 7. There are TWO SYSTEMS of READING and WRITING numbers – the INDIAN SYSTEM of numeration and the INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM of numeration. 8. PLACE VALUE and FACE VALUE - the PLACE VALUE of a digit in a number depends upon the place it occupies in the place value chart. The FACE VALUE of a digit in a numeral is the value of the digit itself. 9. The INDIAN Place value chart is given below: ![]() 10. In a given Numeral, periods are separated by using commas. 11. In the Indian system of numeration, first comma is placed after three digits from the right and other commas come after every two digits to the left of the first comma. 12. In the International System of Numeration, comma is placed every three places, starting from Right. The International Place Value chart is given below.
13. Reading a numeral – while reading a numeral, all the digits in the same period are read together and the name of the period except the ones is read along with them. # For example: a number – ‘55258712’ In INDIAN SYSTEM – it is written as - 5,52,58,712 Read in words as – "Five crore fifty-two lakh fifty-eight thousand seven hundred twelve" In INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM – it is written as – 55,258,712 Read in words as – "Fifty-five millions two hundred fifty-eight thousands seven hundred twelve" 14. Please note that 1 hundred = 100 = 10 x 10 = 10 tens 1 thousand = 1,000 = 10 x 100 or 100 x 10 = 10 hundreds = 100 tens 1 lakh = 1,00,000 = 100 x 1000 or 1000 x 100 = 100 thousands = 1000 hundreds 1 crore = 1,00,00,000 = 100 x 100000 or 10000 x 1000 = 100 lakhs = 10,000 thousands ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - If we arrange the numbers from the smallest to the greatest then it is said to be an Ascending order.
